In this review GolfWashington is proud to feature Homestead Farms Golf Resort and Community.  When compiling my notes for this article, two words kept coming to mind, scenery and amenities.  For those unfamiliar, Homestead Farms is much more than just a golf course.  Located approximately 20 minutes north of Bellingham near the town of Lynden, Homestead Farms is a full resort community.  In addition to the exceptional golf, they also offer a variety of on site services, stay & play packages and course related real estate opportunities.  The resort accommodations consist of fully furnished condominium units that are located along the 6th fairway just a short walk from the clubhouse.

The perfect Stay & Play destination
Homestead Farms also features an expansive clubhouse that includes a restaurant and lounge, full banquet facilities, corporate conference rooms, well-stocked pro shop and even a fitness room for those cardiovascular types.  Homestead Farms is best described as a destination golf resort and planned community tucked away in a beautiful part of our state.

Which brings me to the scenery; I’ve had the opportunity to play many first class golf courses throughout the area but from the standpoint of scenery alone, Homestead Farms easily ranks high on my list.  Sweeping views of Mt. Baker, the Cascade mountain range and the surrounding Nooksack Valley are ever present.  If you enjoy scenic golf courses, Homestead Farms delivers.

The course itself features 18 holes of championship golf.  The signature 18th hole at Homestead is the Northwest's only Par 5 with an approach shot to an island green.  In the 2000 edition of Golf Digest, the course was given a “4 Star” rating among its “Places to Play.”  With a par of 72, the course plays over 7200 yards from the tips, so it’s plenty of test.  However there are 3 other available sets of tees that play to 6500, 6000 and 5,735 yards respectively, so fear not.  The difficulty in this course, in my opinion, does not lie in its length as much as in its plethora of hazards.  Fairway and greenside bunkers are a factor on every hole with water hazards thrown in for good measure on 15 of the 18 holes.  Risk and reward is at the heart of most shot decisions and club selections.  If your game leans toward greedy, this course is more than capable of changing your tune!

The scenery can be spectacular!
It’s been my experience that the “little things” or attention to detail, can go a long way in creating an enjoyable golf experience.  I’m happy to report that the “little things” are certainly not overlooked at Homestead.  The course is well marked and the scorecard provides lots of helpful tips for successfully negotiating each hole.  The practice range and putting green are easily accessible from the parking lot and are located close to both the clubhouse and the 1st tee.  A snack shack on the 1st tee and a heated restroom with drinking fountains and soda machine located between the 3rd green and 4th tee, add to the convenience.  While Homestead Farms is located a bit off the beaten track, it’s definitely worth the trip.  For more information visit their site at: http:www.homesteadfarmsgolf.com
