Brandes, Coston Qualify for US Senior Open
Monday, 29 June 2009
Bellevue's Tom Brandes shot a three-under-par 68 to win the US Senior Open qualifier played at Bellingham Golf and Country Club today. Joining him at Crooked Stick GC in Carmel, IN, July 27-Aug 2 will be Jeff Coston whose two-under 69 assured him of a place at his third US Senior Open in succession.
Brandes reached the turn in one-over 37 but with birdies at the 10th, 13th, 15th and 17th came home in an impressive 31 strokes to lead the 70-man field. A member at Rainier Golf and Country Club in Seattle, Brandes has been first alternate at the championship the past two years.
Coston, who missed the cut at the Senior PGA Championship in May, shot halves of 35 and 34 to qualify in second place, one ahead of Monroe's Scott Taylor who will be the first alternate.
Bellingham G&CC was one of 42 sites around the country chosen to host qualifying events. 75 non-exempt spots were available for the 156-player championship field. This year, the USGA accepted 2,718 entries.
