Don't make me think! I guess the golf industry has come to the conclusion that giving the weekend warrior parking lot choices is the way to go. Speaking only for myself, when the peg goes in the ground, what little mental capacity I do possess need be fully directed at making a reasonably spasm free pass at the ball. And then trying to do it again and again. No small task when engaging in an endeavor that penalizes mental mistakes yet is played best with a dome free of clutter. But the tekkies who tout "better golf through math", have decided I also need to ponder my particular weighting scheme and selection of shaft for that day. First of all I'd end up WAY overanalyzing the selection. Not to mention upon spraying that first errant shot of the day, the confidence in my specification selections will have turned to doubt. And we are all aware of the effects that a good dose of doubt has on our scores! But I digress. Here are but a few of the new toys we'll see this year.Keep in mind that choosing the right equipment is important in giving yourself the optimum chance to play your best. It's important to realize that no like pieces of equipment perform the same for all golfers. We all have different swings, strengths and weaknesses in our game. Buying the wrong gear for your individual swing and game can be an expensive mistake. Forget the cost of the clubs, if you are playing badly, you are likely paying your buddies on a far to frequent basis. So be realistic in assessing your overall game, get fitted, and educate yourself as to the benefits of certain technologies. So what can you expect to take the golf industry by storm in 2008? At the top of the list this year are drivers with interchangeable shafts. The ability to try different shafts in the same driver head quickly and easily—previously only available to Tour players—is now a reality for the average golfer. Among the offerings are Nickent’s 4DX Evolver Driver IST (which stands for interchangeable shaft technology), How shall I scew myself today? TaylorMade’s r7 CGB MAX Limited and Callaway’s i-Mix-FTi. Also noteworthy for 2008 is TaylorMade’s LDP (Low Drag Performance) Golf Ball, which is designed to add distance on off-center hits. Control or Doubt? 'Tis a fine line! If not the club, it must be my balls! Cleveland continues to raise the bar with their legendary wedge performance by coming out with a Gelback insert for enhanced feel and sound, as well as Zip Grooves to gain extra spin and control. Also worth a mention are the Bridgestone J36 irons, constructed with forged carbon steel with a traditional feel and smooth transition from the blade to a unique pocket cavity.
