Brian Thornton of Meridian Valley CC won the Northwest Open at Wine Valley GC in Walla Walla Wednesday, shooting a final-round 66 for a one shot victory over Brandon Kearney and Michael Haack.

Peck; T24 after 72, 73

Olympia's Cameron Peck finished top Washingtonian in strokeplay qualifying at the US Amateur Championship Tuesday, adding a two-over 73 at Chambers Bay to the even-par 72 he had shot at the Home Course on Monday. On 145, the Texas A&M sophomore completed the 36 holes in a tie for 24th, nine shots behind medalist Jeff Wilson. Fellow Olympian Jarred Bossio and Tacoma's TJ Bordeaux are also through.

Jeff Wilson

For most of the day, it seemed anything under par would be good enough to put you within easy reach of the lead in the strokeplay section of the US Amateur Championship. 23 players did manage to finish in the red, but no one went lower than three-under. Well, not until 47-year-old Californian car dealer Jeff Wilson stunned everyone watching, himself included, by finishing his round at the Home Course with two eagles for an incredible ten-under-par 62.
