Golf course superintendents started throwing chemicals, especially pesticides, at their courses in the 1940s and '50s following the introduction of DEET. 60 years later, our sport still has a reputation among non-golfers for massive overuse of chemicals and irresponsible use of water. Representatives from a group of Northwest environmental organizations met with members of the press at eco-friendly Chambers Bay Monday to explain what measures they are taking to right six decades of wrong, and change the public's perception.
