Local and state brass support The First Tee
The program seeks to provide safe, fun, and effective ways to introduce school children to basic golf skills while promoting character development through The First Tee’s Nine Core Values. These values, which represent many of the inherently positive values connected with the game of golf, include: confidence, responsibility, judgment, respect, sportsmanship, courtesy, honesty, integrity, and perseverance.

Participating schools include African American Academy, Bailey-Gatzert Elementary, Beacon Hill Elementary, Dearborn Park Elementary, Greenwood Elementary, Hawthorne Elementary, Kimball Elementary, Lafayette Elementary, Loyal Heights Elementary, Maple Elementary, John Muir Elementary, Roxhill Elementary, John Stanford International, Thornton Creek at Decatur Elementary, Thurgood Marshall Elementary, TT Minor Elementary, Van Asselt Elementary, and View Ridge Elementary.

The First Tee National School Program curriculum is based on national physical education standards and utilizes developmentally appropriate golf equipment called SNAG (Starting New At Golf) that is safe and fun for children and beginners.

“This is a great opportunity to bring sport related skills into the elementary schools while making a community connection,” said Lori Dunn, K-12 Physical Education Manager for Seattle Public Schools.

The First Tee National School Program is now taught in more than 2,000 schools across the country.  It is structured to present a quality, school golf curriculum that develops competency, understanding and progression through movement and physical skills, according to Benna Cawthorn, director of The First Tee National School Program.

"Through this program, children as young as five will be exposed to the motor patterns associated with golf, along with the inherent values of the game" Cawthorn explained.

Students involved in the National Schools Program will have the opportunity to continue learning the game and the life-enhancing values associated with golf by enrolling in The First Tee of Greater Seattle. The First Tee of Greater Seattle provides affordable golf and educational life skills programming at three local golf facilities: Jefferson Park Golf Course on Seattle’s Beacon Hill, Jackson Park Golf Course in North Seattle, and Crossroads Par-3 Golf Course in Bellevue.

The First Tee of Greater Seattle is underwriting the cost of the program and providing necessary equipment and training for the physical education teachers so there is no cost to the schools.
