A few hours after arriving home from Hawaii where he and his fellow Huskies had finished tied for second at the Mauna Lani Invitational, Nick Taylor was carrying the Olympic Torch through his hometown of Abbottsford, BC. The 21-year-old former World Amateur #1 was originally scheduled to carry the torch in the town of Merritt, 130 miles northeast of Abbottsford, at 7am. But that would have needed no flight delays and perfectly-timed connections once on the ground to get there in time. After an appeal went out to the Vancouver Olympic Committee (VANOC), Taylor got the go-ahead to run in Abbottsford at 6.45pm. He described running the 300m as a 'Once in a lifetime' experience. 'It wasn't quite what I expected,' he added. 'There were people out on the streets cheering. I was the next to last person to carry the torch before it entered a stadium with about 14,000 fans waiting.' The Huskies next compete at the Battle of the Beach at Pelican Hills GC in Newport, Calif, Feb 14-16. |
