July has been designated 'Family Golf Month' by Play Golf America and 25 facilities around the state will be offering one or more of several programs conceived and promoted by the initiative founded in 2004 by the PGA of America, the PGA Tour, the LPGA, the National Golf Club Owners Association (NCGOA), the USGA and Golf 20/20. Aimed at making it easier for families to schedule tee times and spend some quality time together on the links, each program offers either free green fees for kids accompanied by paying adults, clinics or special competitions. Among the seven main schemes are 'Family Play Days', 'Kids Play Free' and 'Take Your Daughter to the Course' which runs from the 7th to the 13th and in which six Washington courses, including two Seattle city-owned courses, will be participating.
Jackson Park Pete Guzzo, head professional at Jackson Park was encouraged by the number of female golfers he saw last year. ‘We ran Take Your Daughter to the Course alongside our own Chicks with Sticks campaign and had well over 700 women and girls come out to play during the summer,’ he says. In total 84,500 young ladies took part in Take Your Daughter to the Course around the country in 2007. 1,396 sites participated, an increase of 11% from 2006. Guzzo expects to see a similar increase this year. ‘We’re running both programs again in 2008 and because word has got out, we expect to see a thousand or more female golfers.’ For a full list of Washington courses participating in Family Golf Month events, go to www.playgolfamerica.com and click on 'Family Golf Month'. |
