Chris Gregor Geoff Ogilvy made nine pars on his final 9-holes to capture his second World Golf Championship event, the CA played at Doral resort and spa. His 9-par finish was good enough to close the deal in an event where he led wire-to-wire, although no one in the golf world would have guessed it would have been, including Ogilvy. “There’s no way I thought playing the last 9-holes in even par would be good enough, especially since there was a fair bit of talent chasing me”, Ogilvy mused. Ya’ think? The leader board looked like a photocopy of the world golf rankings. Goosen, Singh, Furyk, Scott, Woods and Stricker were all in the hunt but each failed to catch the languid swinging Aussie. Ogilvy’s win made him only the third player to win more than one WGC event. He now has two, along with Darren Clarke which leaves them both a mere 13 behind Woods who has hoisted a WGC trophy an un-freaking believable 15 times! But not this time. In addition to fending off 5 of the worlds top 10 ranked players, Ogilvy also ended Tigers’ consecutive PGA tour win streak at five. Which brings me to another thought on which I must vent my spleen!
After scorecards were added - Ogilvy had the fewest hacks
There were many in the golf world that make their living commentating on our beloved game who honestly thought Tiger had a chance to run the table in ’08. Oh, they all tempered their comments with statements such as “it’s unlikely” but never-the-less they thought it possible. Bullhockey! I don’t believe pigs can fly, I don’t believe Michelle Wie can ever sniff competing with men and I certainly don’t, and never did, believe Tiger could run the table. Not this year or any other. I mean think about it. For starters Tiger only tees it up in reasonably high profile events that attract some of the strongest fields in golf. In addition, anyone skilled enough to play on the PGA tour is capable of flat going low at any given event. So not only is Tiger required to outplay 150 other gifted golfers over a given four day stretch, you can bet a handful of them have picked that particular event to get hot and play better than they have in a while, if not ever! Now granted, if Tiger plays well, he’s always in contention but let’s face it, winning on the PGA tour is almost always a combination of steady play and a fortuitous break or two here and there. An errant drive that isn’t stymied behind a tree, a pulled approach shot into a greenside bunker that should have but didn’t plug under the lip, a chip shot going mach 3 that hit the flagstick and stopped stone dead – or in the case of Ogilvy on the par-3 17th, goes in - instead of running 15 feet past. While I’ll allow that god given talent will prevail more often than not over time, it’s simply not enough EVERY TIME. With Tiger the death of one streak only means the birth of another Tiger said as much in his post round interview. “To win on tour you need to get a few breaks and have things go your way” said Tiger. “I hear Geoff bladed a chip shot that hit the stick and went in for par. Those are the kind of breaks you need to win out here and I’ve been getting those recently but not this week”. In order for Tiger to win every tournament he entered this year, the golf gods would have needed to set up permanent residence on Tigers’ bag. But as weekend warriors all suffering from the same debilitating golf affliction, we are all painfully aware of just how short lived a visit from said gods can be. Apparently they picked this week to vacation in Australia. *Stat of the tournament – Ogilvy led the tournament in greens in regulation despite hitting only 16 of his first 40 fairways!
