Cle Elum's Dan Whitaker won his first round match at the US Men's Amateur Public Links Championship at Murphy Creek, CO, today beating New Mexico's Travis Reid 2-up. A closely fought affair in which neither player held more than a two-hole lead, the match ended on the 18th green with Whitaker parring the tough 468-yard Par 4. Whitaker qualified for matchplay after shooting a superb two-under 69 on Tuesday to add to his opening 77. He was two inside the cut mark of 148, six-over par. Reid had finished the 36 holes of strokeplay in a tie for 7th on 138. California's Aaron Goldberg was Medallist with rounds of 65 and 67. Washington had two other players starting the event; Alex Williams of Vancouver and Michael Wog. Neither qualified for matchplay.
