UW Tie for Second in Hawaii
Friday, 05 February 2010
Beginning the day two shots clear of Stanford at the top of the leader board, the University of Washington was obviously well placed to win the Mauna Lani Invitational on Hawaii’s Big Island, its first tournament of the spring season. A three-over 291 wasn’t good enough, however, the Huskies eventually tieing for second with Oregon, three shots behind Stanford which closed with a two-under 286.
Washington dropped to fifth at one point, but late birdies by Richard Lee and Nick Taylor saw the team climb back up the leader board. ‘I think overall we feel fine,’ said Husky coach Matt Thurmond. ‘It was a good week for us. We're certainly not on the top of our games at this point, but to finish second in a field like this is nothing to be ashamed of. It's just difficult because we felt like it was a tournament that we could have won.’

Taylor finished fourth individually, shooting a level-par 72 today for a 54-hole total of 213, -3. Lee who struggled in the first two rounds, closed with a one-under 71 to tie for 40th on 219. Joining Taylor in the top ten, however, was Charlie Hughes who added a 73 to his previous successive 72s. It was the British Columbian’s first top ten.
Darren Wallace finished alongside Lee on +6 with a final round 75, while Tze-Huang Choo closed with a 76 to tie for 42nd on 227. Chris Killmer, playing as an individual, shot a final round 69, the best by a Husky all week, and finished in a tie for 21st.
