The UW men's golf team dominated the field at the Husky Invitational Monday, shooting a combined 11-under par over two rounds during the first day of competition at Gold Mountain in Bremerton. Second in the team standings is California with a four-man score of 4-under par. Going into the final round, Huskies junior Chris Killmer has the lead after posting a two-round total of 139. 'I just played really simple and putted really well,' Killmer said. Rounding out the top five teams were San Diego State (572), Oregon (585) and Pacific (595). The top of the individual standings had Killmer, California's Michael Jensen (140) in second, Washington's Jens Bracht (141) in third, San Diego State's Johan Carlsson in fourth and California's Eric Mina and John Murphy tied for fifth (143). The UW men finished the day with four players in the top 10. Following Killmer were Bracht (3-under), Richard Lee (2-under) and Nick Taylor (1-under). 'It was really just a good all-around day,' said Washington coach, Matt Thurmond. 'Everybody contributed in their own way. The new guys - Jens and Chris - it was nice to see them get on top of the leader board.' The first day of the ninth annual Husky Invitational yielded uncharacteristically low scores, as Bremerton recorded record temperatures in the 80s, making the greens soft and the fairways dry. 'The course was playing completely different than it did in the practice round,' Killmer said. 'It helped that the greens stayed soft and it really helped to be able to play some of the longer irons.' The most notable shots of the day were two aces during the second round, the first by Oregon's Isaiah Telles on the 184-yard 16th hole, the second by Bracht at the 249-yard 12th. 'I could barely see it go in,' said Bracht afterwards. 'I just struck a two-iron and got lucky. My dad just threw his arms up.' Thurmond, not surprisingly, is extremely encouraged by the performances of Bracht whose first collegiate tournament this is, and Killmer who hasn't played one in over a year. 'It's a great feeling because it means that they're comfortable on the course,' Thurmond said. 'Darren (Wallace) and I were talking about this at dinner last night and we said that given the right scenario, any one of these guys could win this thing. Any time you're teeing off with your fifth guy in the lead, you've got to be happy with your team.' WSU finished two rounds on 602, +26, meanwhile, with Austin Hurt top Cougar after rounds of 74 and 75 that saw him end day one in 22nd place on the individual leaderboard.
