The 15th Sahalee Players Championship gets underway at Sahalee Country Club in Sammamish Tuesday with a typically strong field of 60 top amateurs each looking to add their name to Ryan Moore, Aaron Oberholser, Casey Martin and Jason Gore's on the Rick Acton Memorial Trophy. Among them will be nine of Washington's top amateurs including Derek Berg who lost to Brian Nosler in a play-off at the Washington Open in May and was joint runner-up at last week's Washington Amateur Championship, and Tacoma's TJ Bordeaux who recently returned from Turnberry in Scotland having reached the third round of matchplay in the British Amateur Championship. Also in the field are UW's Nick Taylor from Abbotsford, BC, Phil Mickelson's younger brother Tim, and Greg Norman's son Greg Jnr.
Utah's Daniel Summerhays won last year's event with a fantastic final round 67 to beat California's Eddie Olsen by seven shots. Just nine days later, Summerhays became the first amateur to win on the Nationwide Tour when he beat Chris Nallen and Chad Collins by two at the Nationwide Children Hospital Invitaional. He turned professional soon after so is not eligible to defend this week.
The format is 72 holes of strokeplay with 18 holes to be played on both Tuesday and Thursday and 36 on Wednesday.
