Woodinville's Jarin Todd, one of the favorites for the title, was taken all the way to BanBury GC's 18th hole by 17-year-old Matt Rawitzer from Bellingham in the first round of the PNW Men's Amateur Championship Wednesday. Washingtonians joining Todd in the second round Thursday morning will be Austin Hurt who beat Jonathan Keane 3&1 in another all-Washington affair, Logan Toskey, TJ Bordeaux, Christopher Cho and Jens Bracht who had an impressive 4&3 victory over Florida's Chris Mullhaupt. Chris Holway, Ian Dahl, Tyler Wendelken and Brian Baltzer were the other Washingtonians to go out.

Flores; easy winner
Medalist Erik Flores had an easy time of it against Bill Hole of Vancouver, BC, finishing his match on the 13th hole at which point he stood at five-under par, while Adam Hadwin, beaten in the strokeplay play-off by Flores, also won handily defeating Alabama's Mark Ogren 4&3.
The biggest upset of the day was the match between #3 seed Michael Jensen of Los Altos, CA, and #62 seed Jason Shano of Scottsdale, AZ. Shano, 19, made five birdies to derail Jensen who was unable to repeat the consistency he showed during stroke-play qualifying.
Equally surprising was Matthew Fladwood's defeat of Australian junior Jin Jeong. Fladwood, a 23-year-old from Lake Oswego, OR, got off to a quick start, birdeing four of the first five holes to take a 3-up lead. He never gave it back and held off a late Jeong push to win 1-up.
The championship continues with the second and third rounds of match play on Thursday.  The quarterfinals and semifinals will be played Friday, and the tournament concludes Saturday with the 36-hole final.
