Tom Phillips of Seattle won a sudden-death playoff against first round leader, Keith Crimp of Ellensburg, to win the 44th Pacific Northwest Senior Men's Amateur, held at Loomis Trail Golf Club and Semiahmoo Golf and Country Club at Semiahmoo Resort in Blaine, WA, yesterday. Phillips held a two stroke lead heading into the final round after a composed second round 73 and led by five through 11 holes. A pulled muscle he suffered earlier in the week started to aggravate him towards the end of regulation play, however, and he bogied three of the last five holes, eventually finishing in a tie with Crimp at 6-over par 222. The PNGA Rules Committee decided the sudden-death playoff would start on the 17th and, if necessary, continue to the 18th - statistically the two hardest holes of the championship. Both players missed the green in regulation on the 17th but got up and down for pars. Loomis Trail's tricky 18th proved decisive At the 18th, Phillips hit his a perfect drive but Crimp found the right fairway bunker. His second hooked into the lateral water hazard to the right of the green, allowing Phillips to win the championship with a bogey. This was the first year Phillips was eligible to play in the PNGA Senior Men's after recently turning 55. The Pacific Northwest Senior Men's Amateur Championship is a 54-hole stroke play event open to amateur golfers 55 years of age or older, conducted in two championship divisions; Grand Division and Open Division. Steve Hambleton of Victoria BC won the Open Division on 228, 12 over par.
