Cameron Peck and Andrew Yun progressed to the quarter-finals of the US Junior Amateur after each won two matches Thursday. Yun, raised in Tacoma but now a resident of Chandler, AZ, disposed of California's Jeffrey Kang 3&2 in the morning and followed that with a gripping 21-hole victory over medalist Jorge Fernandez Valdez from Argentina in the afternoon after winning the last two holes to draw level after 18. An impressive five under fours in regulation play, Yun eventually won the match with a par at the third extra hole.
Peck, from Olympia, had a similarly nail-biting morning tussle with Boom Sritart of Texas winning the last to take the match by the narrowest of margins. His afternoon match against Korea's Rak Cho was far less stressful, however, Peck winning on the 13th green after starting the round with three straight birdies and finishing with a total of six.
In tomorrow's quarter-finals, Yun will face Jordan Spieth who beat fellow Texan David Persons 8&7 in the round of 16 while Peck plays 15-year-old Emiliano Grillo of Argentina who tied for second with Angel Cabrera, one shot behind Eduardo Romero, at the North Open in his homeland earlier this year.
Brush Prairie's Gaston De La Torre who beat Sammamish's Kevin Penner in the first round, won his morning match 5&4 against California's Martin Trainer but lost 3&2 in the afternoon to New York's Dominic Bozzelli.
