Players to watch at the PNW Men's Amateur Championship which starts today at Banbury GC, include Erik Flores, the #2 player for the National Champion UCLA Bruins and a 2008 All-Pac-10 First Team selection. A quarter-finalist at last years’ PNGA Men’s Amateur, Flores finished third at last week's Sahalee Players Championship, three strokes behind winner Trent Whitekiller. Another notable is Daniel Nisbet, the top ranked junior in Australia. Nisbet won the 2008 Australian Junior Championship and progressed to the semifinals at last years’ Australian Amateur Championship.
Top Northwest players include British Columbia native Adam Hadwin, a Canadian National team member who attends the Univeristy of Louisville, former UW player Joel Dahmen and Jarin Todd from Woodinville, WA. Now a senior at Sonoma St. University, Todd won his second consecutive Jack Nicklaus Award as the top NCAA Division II golfer in the nation this past college season and has enjoyed a good summer with a tie for 13th at Sahalee and a tie for second at the Washiongton State Men's Amateur two weeks ago.
Past champions of the PNW Amateur include Jack Neville, co-designer of Pebble Beach, 1904 and '05 US Amateur Champion H Chandler Egan, Semiahmoo teaching professional Jeff Coston, Champions Tour player Mark Wiebe, former PGA Tour player Rick Fehr, and current PGA Tour players Craig Kanada, Ben Crane, Jeff Quinney, Nick Flanagan and of course Tiger Woods who won in 1994. Last year at Emerald Valley GC in Oregon, Australian Jake Younan, a sophomore at Texas Tech, beat Patrick Nagle 3&2 in the final after having also taken medallist honors at five under par.
BanBury, part of the Idaho Golf Trail, was designed by John Harbottle and venue for the 2005 U.S. Girls' Junior Championship.
