Medalist, Chris Maletis of Portland, OR, made a clutch putt on the 18th hole to win the 33rd PNGA Men’s Master-40, held at The Home Course in DuPont, WA, last Friday. Maletis and Harry Ferguson of Invermere, BC squared off in the final which ended in dramatic fashion. All square through nine, Maletis stepped up a gear and found himseld 2-up through 15. But he missed a short putt on the 16th to hand a hole back and Ferguson holed a 10-foot birdie putt at the 17th to bring the match back to all-square with one to play. Ferguson then hit a fine approach to the middle of the 18th green but Maletis got inside him with a superb 8-iron to 10ft. Ferguson missed but Maletis made his birdie putt thus winning the match 1-up. Maletis is one of Northwest’s top senior amateurs, a captain and player on many Amateur and Senior Amateur Hudson Cup teams, and the 2007 PNGA Senior Amateur champion. 60 in September, Maletis is the oldest player to win the PNGA Men’s Master-40 Amateur Championship for which contestants must have reached their 40th birthday by the first day of the competition and also carry a handicap index of 16.4 or less.
