Chris Gregor The PGA National course in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida showed its teeth this past weekend and kept scores in check. For cryin’ out loud, Luke Donald shred the lead after two rounds despite a quadruple bogey in the second round on the way to a four-over 74. Of course his nifty little 64 on Friday certainly didn’t hurt but even so, four over par was good enough to make the cut! As play got started in Sundays’ final round, two twenty-something’s (Luke Donald & Matt Jones) and forty-seven year old tour veteran Mark Calcavecchia all shred the lead at minus six. There was a passel O’ players lurking within three of lead including the highest ranked player in the field, the Big Easy, Ernie Els. You remember; he’s the guy who hasn’t won in over three years and has had a bad habit of gagging down the stretch of late when he has had a chance to put one in the win column. If you’ll recall, Els wasted a four-shot, final-round lead in a European tour event in Dubai earlier this year, when Tiger Woods roared past him for a victory. Els made a colossal mistake on the 18th that day, splashing his approach into the water after trying to pull off a spectacular finish. At Hilton Head last year, he was denied when Boo Weekley chipped in twice in the final few holes. And last year in his native South Africa, Els made a triple-bogey 8 on the finishing hole to blow what seemed like another cinch victory. The smooth swinging Els stayed out of his own way on Sunday As it turned out luck was on Els’ side come Sunday as the wind was stiff and combined with brutal pin placements, chances were no one was going to go way low. Going out roughly an hour before the leaders, Els scraped it around to the tune of a three under 67. His round saw him avoid most of the trouble at PGA National, carding only one bogey to go with four birdies – all on the front nine – and tied the low score of the day. Since none of the leaders could even break par, his score held up and one of the sweetest swingers in the game finally hoisted another trophy. While Ernie was thrilled with the win – something about a monkey and his back come to mind – the field was lacking an all star cast. And let’s face it; the scar tissue embedded on the Big Easys’ back side courtesy of Eldrick is thick indeed. No one on earth has been spanked, kicked, slapped and beat on by Tiger any more than Els. While this win was salve on an ever growing wound, true healing won’t be complete until he slays a field that includes his abuser. Good luck Ernie. I like your game and love your demeanor. You seem like a genuinely nice guy. Unfortunately it doesn’t appear a Tiger beating is in your – or anyone else’s immediate future. Ahhh...The sweet taste of victory |
