Adam Hadwin of Abbotsford, BC, carded an opening seven-under par 63 to lead after the first round of stroke play qualifying at the 107th Pacific Northwest Men's Amateur Championship, being held this year at BanBury Golf Club in Eagle, Idaho.
After an astonishing six birdies on his front nine, for an outward 29, Hadwin came home in 34 which included a single birdie at the 443-yard Par 4 15th. It wasn't the first time Hadwin, a senior at the University of Louisville, has shone in the qualifying stages at the PNW Amateur. In 2006, he was medallist at Shaugnessy GC in Vancouver before going out to Tom Glissemayer in the Round of 16.
One shot behind is Washington's Jarin Todd who, at five-under par through the first six holes, must have been thinking lower than the 64 he eventually finished with.
Three players, Michael Jensen, Erik Flores and Logan Toskey had 65s, while four players Jin Jeong, Jens Bracht, Sam Ayotte and William Sjaichudin shot 66. Helped by these and 20 other sub-70 scores on the 6,865-yard layout, the first round scoring average was an impressive 72.97.
Tuesday is the final day of stroke play qualifying. The top 64 will advance to match play the first round of which will be held Wednesday. The second and third rounds will be on Thursday, the quarterfinals and semi-finals on Friday and the 36-hole final on Saturday.
