Erik Flores, 22, of Grass Valley, CA, earned medalist honors at the PNW Men's Amateur Championship at BanBury GC ID, Tuesday after defeating first-round leader Adam Hadwin in a dramatic playoff, a play-off he very nearly missed after falling asleep back at his host family's house following his morning round. After returning to the course in time to hit just two warm-up shots, Flores birdied the Par 4 1st and Par 5 2nd to keep the play-off alive after Hadwin made two birdies of his own. At the third extra hole, Flores looked favorite to win after the Canadian bunkered his tee shot, but Hadwin got up and down to extend the play-off to a fourth extra hole; the 518-yard, Par 5 4th. Flores sent his second shot over the green while Hadwin was just 20ft away in two. But incredibly, Flores holed his chip for an eagle and Hadwin could only two-putt for a birdie. Flores was four-under par for the four extra holes, Hadwin three under. The pair had completed 36 qualifying holes in eight-under par 132, a shot ahead of California's Michael Jensen who added a 68 to his opening 65. Jensen; third In fourth place was Washington's Jarin Todd who could do no better than a level-par 70 a day after shooting 64. The field has now been trimmed to the low 64 players who advance to match play. The cut came at 5-over par 145 which meant five players: Bill Hole, Jason Shano, Mark Ogren, Matt Rawitzer and Zach Macdougall had to playoff for the final four matchplay spots. It was Macdougall from Coquitlam, BC, who failed to progress to the round of 64 which starts tomorrow morning. In all, 12 Washingtonians progressed to matchplay; Todd (4th qualifier), Jens Brecht (T5) who aced the 16th in the second round, Austin Hurt (T13), Christopher Cho (T20), TJ Bordeaux (T20), Logan Toskey (T20), Tyler Wendelken (T38), Brian Baltzer (T38), Jonathan Keane (T46), Chris Holway (T53), Ian Dahl (T53), and Rawitzer who birdied the 16th and 17h then parred the 504-yard Par 4 18th for a 69 to creep into the play-off for the remaining four spots.
