Austin puts a Hurt on the Amateur Field

Austin Hurt... Who's he? Turns out he is a product of Bainbridge Island High School and current member of the WSU golf team. You likely haven't heard his name or read much about him as, quite frankly he hasn't really done much to warrant any ink. In this, his third year at WSU, he competed in 6 events for the cougar golf squad and carded 1 top 10 and 4 top 25 finishes. Now don't get me wrong, he does play Pac-10 golf and did finish 2nd at the 4A State High School Golf Tournament in his senior year at Bainbridge Island, so he has some game. He just hasn't won anything of note. Until today. Hurt began the final round of the 83rd WSGA Men's Amateur at 3 over par and a full 9

Berg wonders what hit him

shots off the 6 under total owned by leader Derek Berg and 8 back of Drew Reinland who sat alone in second. Long story short, Hurt went nuts to the tune of a 7 under round of 65 - one of only 5 rounds shot under par all day - and turned a 9 shot deficit into a one shot victory. WOW! Berg and Reinland carded scores of 75 and 74 respectively and ended up T2. Oh sure, the tournament was played at the Palouse Ridge Golf Club, home course of the Cougar golf teams. However based on his college performance this past fall, I don't think home course advantage was at all a big deal. If asked, I'm guessing Austin would determine this to be one of, if not the finest round of his golfing career. No bogeys, 5 birdies and an eagle on a day when the next best score was 69 and only four other golfers managed to play the final round under par! So a tip o' the cap goes to WSU golfer Austin Hurt. So now you know.....He's a Bainbridge Island grad, current WSU golf team member and, oh-by-the-way, 2009 WSGA Men's Amateur Champion. Nice round Austin.

Note: 1975 Men's Amateur Champ Bob Burton, who started the day 1 under par and had hopes of winning the event 34 years apart, stumbled to a 7 over round of 79 and finished T14. Nice tourney anyway Bob. Way to give the kiddies a run for their money!
